On the Northen side of the Madonie, surrounded by oak woods, Gratteri boasts a significant artistic heritage. You can’t miss the ancient church of Santa Maria del Gesù(1150), with its beautiful Norman façade, the church of San Sebastiano (1400), the church of Sant’Andrea, from the same period, featuring an Ecce Homo by Fra Umile da Petralia and the Old Mother church (1350), whose bell tower contains seven bells. If you feel like having a walk, we suggest reaching the San Giorgio Abbey (1140) remains, rising in a wide clearing surrounded by lush oak trees.
As far as events are concerned, you can’t miss the fried vastedda (bread with cow spleen) festival, in August, and the illuminations on St. Joseph’s day.
