Situated in the hilly area of the Belice valley, this town is full of Orthodox churches: the Mother church, dedicated to San Nicolò di Mira, the church of the Immacolata and the church of San Rocco. Within the municipality you can also visit the Abbey of Santa Maria del Bosco Calatamauro, which belonged to Eleonora d’Aragona and which originally contained the famous bust by Francesco Laurana, which is now displayed in Palazzo Abatellis in Palermo. The Holy Week celebrations are particularly dramatic in Contessa Entellina, as they follow the typical patterns of the Byzantine rite areas.
