Situated along Palermo’s east coast, upon a lush hill overlooking the sea (facilities available on the beach), this maritime town is surrounded by luxuriant gardens, mainly featuring medlars. The Mother church, the suggestive Chapel of Santa Rosalia and the ancient wash-house are quite interesting. The Vetrana beach and the lovely village of San Nicola l’Arena with its castle, overlooking the tourist harbour, are part of its landscapes.
The medlar festival is held in the first decade of May; the town ranks high in Italy as far as the growing of this fruit is concerned.
